Austin Winchell – Barging Clatskanie Ramp

We headed up north from Portland and crossed over in Longview, Washington. Along the way we came across Clatskanie, Oregon which has a fun undercover skatepark. They have an 8 or 9 foot halfpipe and we had to hit it up. Austin shreds so he was boosting all sorts of good stuff in the pipe.

We had to stop off in Astoria to skate the park and to grab some brews at the Rogue Brew house out on a pier. It was AMAZING. But then we got back to the skating!

The skatepark in Astoria was sick. It had fun little stuff and big gnarly stuff. A super gnarly deep end in the bowl actually. Austin and Joe pretty much shut down the park. They were shredding way too hard and I feel like the locals got kind of discouraged. BUT we figured that out soon and so we started trying to interact with everyone more to get them skating as well. There was a group of punks off to the side yelling at people and threatening kids. I think it stoked everyone out that we weren’t being jerks and that we were sticking up for everyone else who was just learning. I hate when people just hang outside of skateparks and try to cause trouble, it is totally unnecessary. The only rough thing about this park is the concrete! Cheese grater concrete for days! After sliding around back into tranny a few times I was wishing I had some wheels that would have withstood the beating a bit better. Something like the Abec 11 Fernando Yuppie Powerslides, I couldn’t flatspot those things and usually I can do that with ease!

From Astoria, Oregon we made our way down to Seaside, Oregon. I love that place and it has grown a lot since I was last there! The park is better than that weird indoor one they had before too. We got to Seaside kind of late and everyone was pretty burnt out but we managed to get a couple tricks in. Again, Austin decided to get gnarly and back lip side the deep end of the big bowl. I don’t know how he does it.

After the Seaside session we decided it was time to roll out and find a place to camp. We stopped by Safeway, grabbed some late night supplies, and barged a campsite. We got lucky cause normally that kind of stuff doesn’t fly at a full campsite without a reservation but in the morning the rangers didn’t care. Someone who had reservations never showed up so it wasn’t any skin off their backs! Plus I am pretty sure the ranger who spoke with us was Tommy Chong.

The next day was super rough for me. I was a little under the weather due to certain beverages I felt I needed to consume the night before. Plus I went to bed at like 2am and woke up at about 8:30am. We woke up and headed to Nehalem, Oregon to hit up this weird little park. It is an undercover ramp that goes from about 5 feet to 9 feet. I passed out on the deck for a bit in my Poler Nap Sack cause i needed to recoup. Afterwards I pulled out the camera and got some pics of Austin getting crazy. Joe was killing it too but he wanted to get video so he was filming a lot the whole time.

Driving back up to Cannon Beach from Nehalem only takes a couple minutes but you climb in elevation very fast! I ended up snagging this shot of Manzanita, Oregon on the way up!

I don’t know how easy it is to tell how tight the tranny on here is but this wall is about 6 feet tall and the only transition in wall is about 2 feet at the bottom. It went straight up into over-vert. Joe is good at jenky situations like this and so it only took him a few tries to start rolling away from every fs slash. However, before he rode away from them his board decided to attack me. I was on my knees getting a low angle and his board shot out straight into my kneecap. Luckily it hit the meat rather than the bone but my God it got nice and swollen. As I sit here writing this with my leg bent it still hurts and I have a sweet bruise from it. Kinda sucks.

From there we were all pretty beat so we just rolled back home. It was SOOOOO nice to post up in my own bed for the evening. But the next day I went out to skate the hood river, oregon park so I really didn’t give my body any proper rest. Oh well, I guess thats what being a skater is all about right? Right!

The Mavet in all it’s glory!

After months of grueling work the Mavet has finally arrived! It is the love-child of Daddies Board Shop and Landyachtz. We have been really wanting to dabble in the versatility of the switchblade cause we love the shape! The Mavet has the awesome pockets and shape that the switchblade normally comes with but it has the added grip of a topmount! It is also pretty cool because there are no other topmounted switchblades out there!

For the Mavet we wanted to go with the 36 incher because it was a newer size but also because it is really versatile. Boards are getting smaller and smaller as riders progress so the 36 just made sense. It is small enough to be a fun and nimble little city smasher but can also hold it’s own freeriding and doing downhill. And there is just enough space on the nose and tail to help you get off curbs and such! We think that the Mavet is the bees-knees!

The Mavet is part of a super limited run! We only made 100 so get them while they last! Hopefully this inspires Landyachtz to make more topmount switchblades because we have already found out how freaking fun this board is!!! To everyone who gets a hand on one of these guys… we hope you have as much fun on it as we do!

Well I've certainly found a way to keep my speed skills sharp! I grew up racing go-karts and when I was offered a kart here in Bogota to rip around to my hearts content, I did just that. I'm going again on Saturday... Then probably again, and again and again.

Katie, as you know is one of the gnarliest skaters out there. The reason that I don't say "gnarliest women skaters" is because that just doesn't do her justice. She is in a class of her own. After last season she went under for some surgery to fix up some rusty bones and she is still recovering. But to keep up her taste for speed she is ripping around a this sweet go-kart!

Last weekend I rolled up to Seattle with a crew of homies for some good ol’ fashioned park thrashing. I woke up bright and early around 6am to get ready for the 3 hour drive up. I picked up my homie Joe Kiser first, then we rolled to Battle Ground, Washington to pick up our Buddy Austin Winchell. I have seen Austin grow into a gnarly skater over the past few years. He grew up at the Battle Ground, Washington park so it wasn’t very hard for him to get gnarly fast. That park is perfect and it is filled with burly shredders!

After we got Austin we headed up to Longview, Washington to pick up our buddies Chris Grasser and John Wicklander. Both of them are insanely good. The entire crew that I rolled up with blew my mind the entire trip. Nothing was too big for them to skate, and we skated some HUGE tranny. Right when we rolled up to the first park of the day, Delridge Skatepark, the crew dropped into a 12 foot bowl and started boosting backside airs and smith grinds left and right.

Then we rolled out to Beacon Rock skatepark which is also brand new. Sure enough everyone started shredding ridiculously. It was pretty blown out there, TONS of little kids trying to slide into the bowls. I said a few things around a few parents to try to have them wake up and realize that kids playing in a gnarly skatepark isn’t the safest thing they should do. After that it got a little bit better. There was a smaller little kicker thing with a rail on it and John and Chris decided that they were going to go at it as fast as they could and boost off of it huge. Pretty much everything went down first try so it was hard to get pictures of everything, but I snagged a few lurker shots. This was the second park we went to and unfortunately I cracked my deck. Luckily I had a little cruiser board to mess around on. It was pretty hard to skate a park with it though, I didn’t have much luck unless it was on tranny.

Next stop was Marginal Way, an epic DIY park under a bridge in Seattle. It is like the chill, nicely built Seattle version of Burnside. The vibe was rad there. There was only one other guy there until the end of our session when some gangster dudes showed up and started destroying it too. We hung out with them for a bit, drank some adult beverages, and were on our way to the next park. BUT before that we had to sesh a little jersey barrier outside of the park.

Two nice young ladies came to hang out with us. They wanted to take photos of everything going on. I think this stoked our crew out and made them wanted to shred harder. Truthfully, I think they just liked their biking pants… you guys probably do too!

We then headed to Seattle center skate park… but it was super blown. SOOOO many kids doing the weirdest tricks. That place has absolutely no flow. It is built really nice but its too small for how many people were there. We were over it pretty quick. We also somehow ended up in a wedding photoshoot in the middle of the park. I did a hard flip on the side of a couple while my friend did a kick flip or something on the other side.

So check it out guys, here is Michael Virgin who is part of the group FreshlyPaved. If you guys haven’t figured it out yet, everyone at FreshlyPaved basically shreds. They are all freeriding machines.

Michael goes hard in this one. Fluid 360 slides, 270 checks, 360 shove its, slide big spins… I mean it is just endless. The funny thing is, everyone in the group as the same tricks. It is baffling. Every video these dudes put out is fire!

We here at Daddies Board Shop have acquired a new shredder. He is a young fellow from  here in the Pacific Northwest, Marcus Dalton! He has a super unique style, especially to this area, very flowy and relaxed… we like that!

Marcus was rocking a fun a little setup. He is on a sector 9 downhill division “Lacey.” He was riding a short wheelbase on it and I saw him doing manuals and mini ollie’s all day on it. He has 50 degree caliber baseplates with randal hangers and 78a center set sector 9 race formula wheels.

Hands down the best part about skating with Marcus was that he was totally down to adventure and go hit up crazy random spots. I love that. I grew up street skating so I was always on a quest with my friends to find new spots. Most of the time when I shoot longboarding we hit up a hill and pretty much stay there the entire time. Marcus was all about exploring and finding new spots, regardless of how good the pavement was. I want to see more of this in longboarding for sure. There are too many photo shoots and video shoots in super fancy rich neighborhoods. I feel like places like that are good for practicing and learning. It is kind of like how skateparks work, good for learning tricks and dialing them in… but you wouldn’t really film a video part there. Street just looks way more interesting and creative! It works the same with longboarding, the weird alleyways and jenky spots look way sicker!

This spot was pretty funny. We had finished up skating a different spot and we went searching for something new. There was a huge group of people walking down here in a tour or something so we thought we would give it a look-see. After shredding for about 5 minutes we got stopped by a lady who 1.) wanted to know what we were doing and 2.) asked us not to publicize the spot. I just told her we wouldn’t mention any street names… but truthfully… what skaters look at street names when they are out skating? I would have no idea how to get back here!

So there you have it folks, Marcus is a new dude that you will be seeing more and more of. We are super stoked that he is part of the team and we can’t wait to work with him more and more!
